Midnight In The Pinelands

Midnight In The Pinelands

That morning, we were assisting on a fieldtrip to Anhinga Trail in the Everglades for disadvantaged Miami students, but extended our visit for two nights at Long Pine Key Campground. This photo was taken just before midnight beside a lake in that area. The glow in the sky comes from the lights of Miami, and is accentuated by the long exposure. To keep the stars from stretching, we needed to keep the shutter speed below 21 secondsexplained, so we had the aperture all the way open and the ISO cranked up to 4,000. Compare to Nautical Twilight In The Glades, which was taken earlier the next night.

You might also notice the big dipper (Ursa Major) spilling above the pines.

Photographic details: Canon EOS 7D camera w/ EF 16-35 f/2.8 L USM autofocus lens set at 16mm. Flash was not used. Camera was on f/2.8 for 20 sec at ISO 4000.
