Silver Bank, Dominican Republic
The Silver Banks are eighty miles north of the Dominican Republic. That is where the Humpback Whales of the North Atlantic go to breed and calve, and that is where you can go to swim with the whales. We were on another expedition with Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris.
Humpback Whales grow to be fifty feet long and weigh forty tons. When one of these approaches you, as this one did, it is truly awesome. That is Bruce to the left. This particular whale liked to swim below him and blow bubbles.
Nancy had a very close encounter of her own; this same whale swam below her and gently lifted her completely out of the water. For more information, see the following: Nancy On Humpback Whale
