Mother Screech Owl with Fledgling
South Miami, Florida
This picture was taken in our backyard. For about five years we had a pair of Eastern Screech Owls (Megascops asio) use our nest box to raise their families, usually two chicks. It was amazing to see the parents return from a hunting trip several times each night with dinner (roaches, lizards, etc). The male was just a little smaller and rufous (reddish) in color. In late April the first fluffy head of a chick would appear in the entrance hole. Then in early May they would fledge and the parents would guide them into the our avocado tree, where this image was captured. A few days later they would all be gone.
